Where are they? The Chaldean auxiliary bishop Shlemon Warduni has again launched a fervent appeal for the brutally persecuted Iraqi Christians in. “Where is the respect for the right of the Christians in Iraq?” he asked in an interview with Vatican Radio. He added: “We want to move the conscience of the whole world: Where is Europe? Where is America?” Warduni also said that among the Islamic ISIS-militants there are 2000 originating from European countries.

Corrupt Government: Radio Vatican spoke about the persecution of the Iraqi Christians with the Iraqi writer Younis Tawfik, a Muslim from Mossul who lives in Italy. Tawfik said: “The Christians of Mossul are more entitled to their land than we Muslims. They have been in the city before Islam arrived and we are obliged to protect them.” For Tawfik the expulsion of the Christians is the consequence of a corrupt government. Tawfik relates that Mossul Muslim authorities have strongly condemned the expulsion of the Christians.

Cleaning Up Rochester Diocese: After almost 40 years the Diocese of Rochester will stop the abuse of lay-homilies. In an extensive interview, Bishop Salvatore Matano said he has been confronting the issue on a case-by-case basis since his installation in January. Now, he is drafting guidelines to clarify that homilies are reserved for ordained priests and deacons, as prescribed by canon law. The Star Gazette estimates that 20 women, most of them pastoral administrators or associates constituted the bulk of lay homilists.

Discrimination: William Fittall, the Secretary General to the General Synod of the Church of England, told parliament’s Ecclesiastical Committee that in future women will be favoured over men when the church appoints new bishops. The General Synod approved women bishops last week after several previous failed attempts. Although the Church of England is exempted from the Equalities Act, which encourages positive discrimination in certain professions, it nevertheless applies its principles when appointing parish priests. Mr Fittall said this should now also be the case when appointing bishops.
