Leo XIV Appoints German Bishop Who Supports "Blessings" for Homosex Couples
Today, Leo XIV appointed Monsignor Christian Würtz, 55, as Bishop of Eichstätt, Germany.
Leo XIV again chose a canon lawyer. A native of Karlsruhe, he originally studied law at Heidelberg University before entering the seminary. He holds two doctorates - one in both civil and canon law (doctor iuris utriusque) and another in theology.
He also served as rector of Freiburg's seminary.
At 48, he was the youngest bishop in Germany when he was ordained auxiliary bishop of Freiburg in 2019. At 55, he now becomes the youngest diocesan bishop in Germany.

In September 2022, Monsignor Würtz voted "yes" at the German Synodal Way for the controversial document on the Doctrinal Reassessment of Homosexuality. When you never really believed in a church's teachings, or did at one time but then ceased to, the only honorable thing to do is admit it and leave, especially when the world is full of groups who had the guts and decency to do just that in the past and now welcome those who have come to believe as they do with open arms.
What you can't do, and still remain an honorable person, is to allow your fear of leaving to instead turn you into a demanding, disruptive presence who engages in dishonest undercover shenanigans to shove aside those who still believe God’s “old” revelations so you can keep control of the original institution for its comforting familiarty, status, wealth, and political power (and for the great retirement benefits).
Every human has innate biological desires and weaknesses that make him vulnerable to certain kinds of sin, but having a certain innate weakness (e.g., same-sex attraction, or a hair-trigger temper that often makes you hurt those weaker than you) doesn't mean the solution is demanding that the Church change its teachings so your distress can be lifted by sympathetically-but-dishonestly declaring that God never actually considered what you did a sin in the first place.
