On Saturday, July 25, the bells of Golgotha Monastery resounded over the surrounding waters of the Holy Island of Papa Stronsay, marking the episcopal consecration of Father Michael Mary F.S.S.R, Rector Major of the Sons of the Most Holy Redeemer.
The consecration, led by Bishop Pierre Roy along with co-consecrators Bishop Rodrigo da Silva and Bishop Fernando Altamira, took place in the historic Oratory of Our Lady of Casalibus.
The ceremony was attended by members of The Sons and The Daughters of the Most Holy Redeemer alongside representatives of the faithful. The founding of a Third Order for the Congregation of the Sons of the Most Holy Redeemer is provided for in our Constitutions.
Until such a time as there are a sufficient number of committed individuals to warrant the creation of such a Third Order, we have thought it well to establish individual Associated Members of the Congregation of the Sons of the Most Holy Redeemer. Members are associated with the Congregation on a one-to-one basis.
The Associated Members will be the pioneers of the future Third Order foreseen in our Constitutions. The Associated Members have a special recognised place in our Congregation and already as Associated Members they will live a Spiritual Rule that we hope would become part of the Constitutions of the future Third Order. Becoming an Associated Member takes the form of a commitment to the Spiritual Rule.

Last night I was made aware of the Statement of the Diocese of Aberdeen concerning the canonical process of their judgment of schism against me, and their warning that the people of the diocese should have no dealings with us.
The abundant peace that pervades our consciences is ample confirmation to us all that we are Catholics; Catholics made free from the hostage situations that we have survived these past several years. I love those who have judged us. Charity does not feel offended and we are not at all offended by false judgments and exclusions. We ask pardon for all offences that are attributed to us in as far as we are guilty of them. I am not conscious of having said anything or thought anything in order to offend charity. Still, it is to be expected that different opinions, because they are different, can cause offence. Pardon me.

What follows in this article is an extract from his doctoral dissertation The Renunciation of an Ecclesiastical Office, published here with the kind permission of The Catholic University of America Press.
The dissertation is on the concept of “tacit resignation” in Canon 188 of the 1917 Code of Canon law, the meaning of a “public defection of faith” in §4, and how this public defection results in the resignation mentioned.

Many believe that the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) was excommunicated from the Catholic Church following the much-anticipated consecrations of four new bishops on July 1, 2026 without getting the Papal mandate.
In fact, there is a large contention of pseudo-traditionalists and conservatives who are relishing in the false belief that the SSPX was excommunicated and yet still feel free to criticize aspects of Vatican II and the New Mass while virtuously claiming to be obedient sons of the Holy Father.
