The Ontario English Catholic Teachers’Association (OECTA) has released the findings of a survey titled, A System Under Strain: Violence and Harassment in Ontario Schools. The bottom line: “Violence has become the ‘new normal’ in classrooms across the province." The survey shows an increase in violence and harassment against teachers and students. Teachers are reporting an average of about seven violent incidents a year. They have also lost trust in the present school reporting system in dealing with the violence because they know nothing gets done. According to the president of the teachers' union René Jansen in de Wal, the problem is the result of government under-funding, crowded classrooms, teacher shortages and lack of mental health help. Substantial enrollment declines are precipitating hundreds of teacher layoffs. Funding is per pupil. Fewer students mean fewer education workers. It’s basic math. The layoffs will not result in larger classes or fewer services for kids, but it could, in theory, lead to school closures, although no one is talking about that at the moment. This is a crisis for the affected unions, though.
